Introduction
The first thing people notice about you is your appearance, even if they don’t realize it. By taking care of yourself with good grooming habits, you show others that you value yourself and are confident in who you are as a person. In addition to looking good, maintaining good grooming habits can also improve your mood and self-esteem, which makes you more attractive to other people too! Here are five tips on how to be more appealing and masculine by taking better care of yourself through grooming practices.
Step 1 – Use a skin moisturizer
Men’s skin is thicker than women’s skin and it tends to be oilier. That means that not only do you need a moisturizer, but you need one designed for men. Look for moisturizers that contain alpha hydroxy acids or retinol, as they help exfoliate dead skin cells on your face, leaving you with fresh new skin. Use it after you shower while your pores are open, so they can take in all of those moisturizing properties. At night, apply sunscreen before your regular moisturizer so that your skin has a chance to soak up both components at once.
Step 2 – Moisturize your skin daily
Keep your skin hydrated with a daily moisturizer. Although most men are fine using a bar of soap in combination with a loofah and body wash, it’s important to note that soap dries out your skin by removing all of its natural oils. Thus, when you begin applying products such as cologne and aftershave, your skin will not be able to absorb them properly. By regularly moisturizing with lotion or cream (use an unscented variety), you’ll help maintain and build more youthful-looking skin. That said, make sure you choose wisely when selecting lotions; many contain harmful ingredients that can cause rashes or other irritation on your face or body.
Step 3 – Use a face scrub once a week
Men’s skin can get just as dry and flaky as women’s skin, so it’s important to cleanse regularly. Try a glycolic or salicylic acid face scrub one or two times a week in place of your normal cleanser. These exfoliants will help clear up your skin and unclog pores, leaving you with soft, smooth skin and less acne. (Remember to always use sunscreen!) If you tend toward oily or combination skin, choose an exfoliant made with charcoal or bamboo—both ingredients help keep excess oil at bay without stripping your skin of its natural oils. And for those looking for natural options, choose an exfoliant containing tea tree oil, oatmeal or aloe.
Step 4 – Take care of your hair
It’s true that hair loss is a problem many men face at some point in their lives. This is typically due to genetics or male pattern baldness. Even if you don’t suffer from hair loss, however, it’s still important to keep your hair well-conditioned and looking healthy. Men with long hair should invest in shampoos that can protect against split ends, while men with short haircuts need haircare products that create volume and texture. Whichever hairstyle you choose, just make sure it looks good on you before spending money on fancy products.
Step 5 – Get enough sleep
The link between sleep and weight gain is clear. When we don’t get enough shut-eye, we tend to find ourselves reaching for unhealthy snacks. (If you’re too tired to resist a snack, it’s already too late). So make sure you get seven or eight hours of uninterrupted shuteye every night. Don’t take naps—they can throw off your body clock and make it harder for you to fall asleep at night. It may be tempting, but try not to have caffeine too late in the day either; it can keep you up when all you want is an early bedtime.
Step 6 – Growing beared regularly
Shaving not only keeps your face baby-smooth, but it also prevents ingrown hairs and razor burn. If you can’t seem to find a time during your day for shaving, perhaps try scheduling it in after you get out of work. Doing so will allow you to treat yourself to a nice hot shower before heading home; and when you wake up in the morning, your face will feel as soft as a baby’s bum!
Step 7 – Wear sunscreen daily
If you’re out and about, be sure to wear sunscreen. If you have time before work, try a quick shave so that you don’t look like a character from Duck Dynasty. If you’re headed out for an important meeting or interview, have someone help you pick out your outfit (with color coordination in mind). Looking good isn’t just about vanity—it’s also about your health. And when it comes to protecting your skin from UV rays (which can lead to skin cancer), a few extra minutes in front of your mirror each morning might save you lots of agony down the road.
Step 8 – Get an eyebrow not trim in life
While there’s nothing wrong with having a little bit of hair on your face, you don’t want it to get out of control. If you let your eyebrows grow out for too long, they can start looking shaggy and unkempt. It’s a good idea to head into your local barbershop or salon every few months for an eyebrow trim. Schedule ahead if possible and treat yourself to a straight-razor shave while you’re at it! You’ll look like one handsome man afterwards.
Step 9 – Don’t neglect your nails!
Everyone knows that our face is important, but your hands and nails are just as important. Having clean, trimmed fingernails not only looks cleaner and better for you, but it’s also a sign of good hygiene. If you want to make sure people look at your nails instead of what’s in your hands, get some nice cologne. Choose a subtle scent like lavender so it isn’t overpowering – that way you’ll get noticed when you talk to someone without being overly smelly or overpowering.
Step 10 - Get a manicure at least once a month.
A lot of guys aren’t fans of getting a manicure. They think it’s too feminine or even gay. If you ever feel that way, it might be time for a change. Not only does manicuring keep your nails looking nice and healthy, but it can also make your hands look bigger and manlier (no pun intended). Manicures are actually really cheap; at most salons, you can get one for under $20. It doesn’t matter if you go in once a month or every few months - just make sure to treat yourself! Men should take care of themselves and their nails are no exception. Before I started getting regular manicures, my nails were wrecked from tinkering around with electronics all day.
